Fridays are pretty amazing in Painting Camp. It's great to get out of the sun a bit but keep painting. There is great camaraderie in the air. They are putting finishing touches on pieces from earlier in the week, making new painting based on these original ones done in the field, and making all new pieces. It's kind of like working all week on riding a bike, and Friday is the day they ride around on their own. We tried to beat the success of Wednesday's Chuy's run, and Thursday's Sonic Blast ice cream bonanza, with tons of cheese and veggie pizza and lemonade. I sent everyone home with their painting kit. I really think the importance of the class is kick starting some ideas then setting them up to keep painting through the summer if not the year. Thank you all very much.

Wednesday Painting Camp Day 3, 2011
We had a great change up today. We went to the lake and sat under the shade of the Bath House. We looked at the paintings of John Marin. They were surprised to find only 1 large brush in their kits. They painted a while, then we went home and cooled off. Then we went to the Dallas Museum of art and drew and discussed the American and European 19th and early 20th century collections. Then we went to Chuy's and had a great group lunch.

Tuesday Painting Camp Day 2

Another great day at the Arboretum today. We talked about moving in very close to your subject, but with an eye on the things around it. We talked about but didn't look at any images of Georgia O'Keeffe. Sometimes I think artists need O'Keefe inoculations so I wanted them to think without seeing her images in their minds before they started. I think these images will have an important new layer after Friday when we go back and work on these. Today there were a lot of kids walking around and looking at what we were doing. There were beautiful big flowers out. Robins were running around everywhere eating worms. Noah accidentally painted himself as well.

Monday Painting Camp Day 1

We had a great day at painting camp today. We met at the house and talked about our materials. We talked about grisaille painting, which is a very muted color or even just black and white version of a painting. It can be used as an underpainting, or as a way to just slow down and think about making marks and looking at light and dark. It isn't used very often with watercolors, but I think it is a good way to start off and get rolling. We looked at Ingres' versions of the Odalisque as a grisaille and in color. We looked at Van Gogh's ink landscape drawings to see his decision making and creativity with marks. We found good spots at the Dallas Arboretum. Some had Cardinals flying and calling all around them. Here is the link to a short video showing this. There were huge swallowtail butterflies al around. We finished the day with snacks and cold drinks.

Thursday
We had watermelon out in the front yard after the long day outside. Tomorrow we will finish editing and add sound. Remember there will be a pizza and pudding lunch for everyone so no need to pack a lunch.
